Building Stone/Highland approval

Originally submitted in 1995, a revised application was submitted for a blockstone quarry at Braxside, Reay for G H Minter, Sandside Estate, Reay, and was approved by Highland Council in May. It had been resolved to renew the permission in 1995 but only subject to legal agreements which were not finally completed. The proposals had been dormant since and no permission was issued. The Reay Diorite is of extremely good quality for blockstone and can produce a highly polished facing surface for dimension stone. There were 18 objections from local residents. Notwithstanding public concerns, an assessment of noise, dust, and blasting issues, gave reasonable confidence that operation~ could be controlled to avoid any significant impacts or unacceptable environmental effects. The central issue to objectors was HGV traffic, particular in Reay which straddles the A836. These concerns had been fostered particularly by experiences in 2001 when the nearby Creaganloisght Quarry at Sandside supplied a substantial volume of rock for Scrabster Harbour in a short period.
