More time allowed for peat extraction in Somerset despite lack of need

Somerset County Council has granted permission to extend the period allowed for peat extraction at White's Drove, Godney Moor until 31 December 2020. The existing permission was due to expire at the end of 2016 but the applicant said it had taken longer than expected to complete the development because of flooding and inclement weather. The extra four years would, the company said, bring the consent into line with the voluntary phase-out date for the use of peat by amateur gardeners.
