MORE than ever before, the mining sector is working to include every stakeholder at every stage of a project's development. Companies can find themselves in a position where an insufficient understanding of the nature, scope and timing of the benefits and costs to be derived from a mineral-development project leads to unrealistic expectations - followed by frustration and disappointment on the part of communities, local governments and civil society. Furthermore, a lack of transparency regarding the key terms and commitments contained in a mineral-development agreement can result in stakeholders 'assuming the worst' about the honesty and fairness of the agreement.
