Power/Drax petcoke application

Consultation on use of petcoke at Drax will run until 11 October. In March the Environment Agency asked the operators of Drax Power station to submit information justifying a case for the long term burning of a coal-petroleum coke (petcoke) mixture if they wanted to progress an application to trial the fuel. This was submitted by July. The Agency informed AES Drax Power Ltd that it will treat the application to carry out an 18 month trial burn of a mixture of coal and petcoke as a request for a standard variation on its existing permission rather than one which involves a substantial change to the process. The Agency said that if Drax wants to change its current operation it needs to demonstrate that excessive cost would be incurred if the power station continued to use coal only.
