Tattershall Thorpe approval

In November Lincolnshire CC approved extraction of 400,000t of sand and gravel on agricultural land east of Annapasture Lane, Tattershall Thorpe by Woodhall Spa Sand and Gravel Ltd; this was subject to a S106 agreement. Minerals were to be transported to the processing plant at the company's adjoining quarry at Kirby on Bain via a new internal haul road rather than via the local highway network. The site was to be restored in a phased and progressive manner back to agricultural land. The extraction site was within an area of high archaeological potential which included a Scheduled Ancient Monument dated to the Iron Age. Geophysical and walking surveys along with two evaluation trenches undertaken to inform the Environmental Statement revealed a number of prehistoric features considered by the archaeologists to be of great significance, although overall there was only a low density of archaeological activity.
