Cumbria County Council has extended the operational timescale for the extraction of St Bees red sandstone from Birkhams quarry near Whitehaven by a further 15 years until 31 July 2030. The quarry produced building stone and dimension stone and was located on the west Cumbrian coast, accessed via a one-kilometre private road. Wainwright's coast-to-coast path adjoined the site, which was also partly within a site of special scientific interest and heritage coast designation. The older part of the quarry was a local geo conservation site for its exposures of the fluvial sandstones of the St Bees sandstones.
