Permission granted on appeal for new sand quarry in East Ayrshire

A reporter has agreed that permission should be granted for sand and gravel extraction in Ayrshire, concluding it represented a sustainable form of development needed to supply the construction industry. The site lay within 300 metres of a special protection area, which provided breeding and foraging habitats for bird communities, and a special area of conservation comprising a low-altitude blanket bog.The reporter placed weight on the lack of objection from Scottish Natural Heritage and RSPB, who were satisfied with the proposed mitigation measures.
