Ok Tedi copper output hit by SAG mill failure

A FAILURE of one of the two SAG mills at the Ok Tedi copper mine in Papua New Guinea will reduce output to a minimum of 50 percent of capacity for the next eight to ten weeks. The cause of the failure and the extent of the repairs required are being investigated. Ok Tedi is expected to have produced around 196,000 t of copper in concentrate and 500,000 oz of gold in 2003, at a total copper cost of around 0.53 US dollars/lb. Ok Tedi had previously planned to produce 675,000 t of copper concentrates in 2004.
