Sterlite Industries Ltd, the Indian-based metals producer, has been selected as the preferred bidder to take over the role of lead investor in Konkola Copper Mines plc (KCM), owner and operator of a group of major copper assets on the Zambian Copperbelt. These include the Konkola under-ground mine; the Nchanga underground and open-pit mines; the associated concentrators; the Nchanga tailings leach plant; the Nampundwe pyrite mine and concentrator; and the down-dip extension to the Konkola orebody, a high-grade, potential underground development (MJ, February 16, 2001, p.122). Some 10,000 direct jobs are at stake in the future development of KCM, and many more indirect jobs stemming from its major position in the Zambian copper industry.
