The technological age has put pressure on the mining industry to procure the minerals and elements that build the machines that have quickly become essential to our everyday lives. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) has already been used in recycling, remote sensing and fertiliser manufacturing, and in the health sector to determine the fluid content in the brains of children. It has even been used to sort oranges in Japan.
