摘要

Sitting on the platform of the Weybourne station waiting for a steam hauled train on the preserved railway line I checked the map supplied by the owner of the holiday cottage where I was staying. I saw to my surprise the words "Weybourne pitsancient ironworkings", (part of OS sheet TG14), marked on the opposite side of the track. Nearby there were references to" Roman pottery kilns", "Flint axes found" and several "tumuli". I thought that I knew most of the sources of iron both past and present having spent six years as lecturer responsible for ironstone mining students at Doncaster and Grantham colleges. I had never found a reference to ironstone in Norfolk. My first investigative step was to visit Cromer museum and library but no one there could recall any reference to ironworking in the locality.
