THE content of bituminous oil in Alberta's oil sands averages anywhere from 8-12 percent and sometimes higher. However, its high carbon content brings the label of 'dirty oil; and Canada fears that future US climate-change legislation could penalise its crude with the likely introduction of an 'upstream' cap-and-trade system under the new administration. Therefore, from 'well to wheel'-oil industry poetry for total lifecycle emissions-the Canadian Association of Pelroleum Producers defends oil sands emissions as 15 percent higher than conventional crude, according to vice-president Greg Stringham.
