Western Fuels-Utah reopens Deserado coal mine in Colorado

Western Fuels-Utah reopened its Deserado coal mine near Rangely, CO. The underground mine, closed since July 18,1995, supplied 154 kt (170,000 st) of coal for Deseret Generation and Transmission Co-operative's Bonanza power station during 1995. The mine expects to produce about 1.3 Mt (1.5 million st) during 1996. Deserado Mine was idled July 18 while Deseret converted 360 kt (400,000 st) of stockpiled coal to cash as part of its financial restructuring effort. During the time the mine was idle, operations were restructured.
