Despite its complex and diverse hydrogeology, Seattle,WA has a long history of tunneling and underground construction. The city is currently experiencing an unprecedented tunneling boom.Tunneling and monitoring have always walked side by side. The real-time monitoring of geotechnical instrumentation started in Europe and Hong Kong in the late 1980s to early 1990s on large urban subway projects.These projects combined several challenges, from underground construction in congested environments to overlapping existing subway lines with new ones. The increase in size of the tunneling machines and the improvement of the technology also required a better control of the settlement.
