The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineering (AIME) has awarded a 4,000 dollars John S. Marshall Memorial Scholarship to John Bowling (SME), a junior at Virginia Tech, and to Jay Gillon (SME), a senior at the University of Nevada-Reno. Each student received the scholarship for the 2007-2008 school year. SME's Mining & Exploration Division Scholarship Committee helped AIME select the winners from a pool of 23 applicants. Bowling is one of the top students in the mining engineering department at Virginia Tech. He is a member of the Burkhart Mining Society (SME),Tau Beta Pi and the International Society of Explosives Engineers. He has worked as a summer intern for Luck Stone in Fairfax, VA and works as a resident advisor during the school year.
