Barrick Gold, Placer Dome to become world's largest gold producer

Barrick Gold's proposed acquisition of Placer Dome moved ahead in late December after Barrick Gold increased its offer to 10.4 billion US dollars from its original bid of 9.2 billion US dollars. Once the deal is completed, the combined companies would become the world's leading gold producer, knocking Newmont Mining out of the top spot. The price of the deal would amount to 22.50 US dollars per Placer Dome share, or 0.8269 of a Barrick share, plus 5 cents for each Placer Dome share. Barrick Gold would partly finance the acquisition with 1.49 billion US dollars it would receive from Goldcorp, which would acquire some of Placer Dome's assets.
