Rio Tinto plans mineral sands project in Madagascar

Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium completed a feasibility study on its mineral sands deposit in Madagascar. QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM), a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium, operates the project. It owns 80 percent of the project in partnership with the Madagascan government. Initial production is expected to be 750 kt/a (826,700 stpy) of ilmenite and 25 kt/a (27,500 stpy) of zircon, QMM said. It will be mined by conventional floating dredge methods. The deposit is located near Fort Dauphin in southeast Madagascar.
