Simkus speaks to Lima Peru section on the second anniversary of the Antamina start-up

Ron Simkus, former president and CEO of Compania Minera Antamina (CMA), was the luncheon speaker for the Lima Section of SME on May 28, 2003. He commemorated the two-year anniversary of the commencement of operations at Antamina. The luncheon was the first of the year for the Lima section and was attended by more than 50 mining professionals. Since the commencement of operations two years ago, CMA has processed more than 43.7 million t (48.2 million st) of ore - mostly copper and zinc, but also molybdenum, lead and other combinations. Simkus said, "Our copper and zinc concentrate output stands at 1.45 million tpa (1.6 million stpy), meeting the targets set forth in our operating plans." Antamina's concentrator began a trial period on May 28, 2001 and reached the targeted production levels on October 1. The operation was officially opened by Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo on Nov. 14, 2001.
