Student chapters play an important role in the professional development of their members. Each year since 1967, SME has recognized an outstanding chapter whose members have conducted their business in a serious and mature manner. Outstanding performance is determined by a review of student chapter annual reports. They provide a record of activities and encourage professional accountability.The 2001 SME Outstanding Student Chapter contest winner is the University of Arizona Student Chapter of SME. Satya Harpalani is the faculty sponsor, Matthew Sullivan is the chapter president.
