Fatalities in U.S. mines at all-time low in 2009

The U.S. mining industry followed the record-setting safety successes of 2008 with an even better year in 2009. Tough safety regulations and strong federal and state enforcement were credited with helping the industry finish the year with just 34 deaths. U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records show 16 people died in metal and nonmetal mining accidents while 18 people perished in coal mine-related accidents in 2009, for a combined 34 deaths, surpassing 2008's lowest-ever record of 52 mining fatalities.
