Sandvik supplies 12 steel belt cooling systems for coal liquefaction

Sandvik Process Systems has supplied 12 dedicated steel belt cooling systems for coal liquefaction to China's largest coal producer, the Shenhua Group. Coal liquefaction is a generic term describing the conversion of solid coal into liquid fuel (gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, basics for the chemical industry) and is known under the coal-to-liquid (CTL) principle. This technology is likely to become increasingly important in China, a country with huge stocks of crude oil, but insufficient to meet dramatically increasing local demand. China does, on the other hand, benefit from large stocks of coal. The country started an investment program in the 1970s to use local coal stocks for electrical power generation and direct coal liquefaction (DCL). Development of the coal field and operation of the entire plant, which is China's single biggest investment since the Yangtze dam, is handled by the Shenhua Group.
