The Mining & Exploration Division's Outstanding Young Professional Award is presented to Richard E. Bishop in recognition of his meritorious accomplishments while working in the mining and exploration industries. Bishop graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2001 with a B.S. degree in mining and minerals engineering. After graduation, he moved to Europe to pursue a graduate degree in mining engineering at the Helsinki University of Technology, the Royal School of Mines in London, Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen, Germany and at TU Delft in the Netherlands.
