A report released by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) said that the coal industry might face a bleak future unless the industry develops ways to capture and store carbon dioxide on a commercial scale. The MIT report notes that coal use accounts for half of the electricity production in the United States and that it will remain the fuel of choice. It is a relatively cheap and abundant source of energy. However, the report says if carbon limits are imposed to address climate change, that could change unless the government and industry develop a program to capture and store the millions of tons of carbon dioxide that now spew from coal-burning smokestacks into the atmosphere.
