Changes in engineering education will affect the future of SME -- and mining engineering

It has been an honor to serve SME and engineering education through my appointment by SME to positions on the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). This is the organization that assures the quality of engineering programs through accreditation. Within SME, the link to ABET is maintained by the Accreditation and Curricular Issues Committee (ACIC) of the Council of Education. I am writing on my own initiative to explain some of the far-reaching changes that are occurring at an ever-increasing pace in engineering education and to show how these changes impact mining-engineering education. And I am soliciting support for some of the changes that will, in my opinion, keep SME abreast, or even ahead, of the balance of the engineering education community.
