China is largest gold market

Last year, China became the world's leader in gold production and consumption. And private-sector demand for gold, driven by the country's growing middle class, is expected to increase by 25 percent during the next four years. According to a report by the World Gold Council (WGC) issued in April, Chinese demand for gold is expected to rise to 1.35 kt/a (1,490 stpy) by 2017 from its current level of 1.1 kt/a (1,200 stpy).
