Nutrition bars provide healthy boost to otherwise sluggish segment

The health of the bars category is good — but only because of the strength of health and nutrition bars. Dollar sales of the snack bars/granola bars category totaled $5,316,312,000 in the 52 weeks ended Sept. 8, up nearly 4% from the same period a year ago, according to Information Resources, Inc., a Chicago-based market research firm. Unit sales totaled 2,135,122,000, up 2.6%.
