MSHA to propose new rule: Proximity detection systems would be required on machines

A PROPOSED RULE requiring that continuous mining machines used in underground coal mines be equipped with proximity detection systems was published on Aug. 31 by the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). MSHA is proposing a rule instead of issuing a scheduled emergency temporary standard to provide the opportunity for public participation prior to implementation. During the comment period, which will close on Nov. 14, MSHA plans to hold public hearings in Denver, CO on Oct. 18; Charleston, WV on Oct. 20 and Washington, PA on Oct. 25.
