Safety in mining; SME's role in advancing the industry's standing and role

Over the past several months, there have been incidents in mining operations on a worldwide basis that have drawn public attention to the issue of mine safety. The mining community has always taken the issue of health and safety to the heart. Despite that, in the public eye, our industry's performance is not adequate. When I began my term as SME president, I established an ad hoc committee to advise the SME board on how SME can become a "go to" place for information related to health and safety in the mining community. The definition of health and safety for us is broad.
