The Supermarine Seafire was an adaptation of the Spitfire intended for use from aircraft carriers. The idea of a naval version of the Spitfire was proposed before the beginning of the Second World War but was not developed, with the result that the Fleet Air Arm entered the war with unsatisfactory aircraft such as the turret armed Blackburn Roc (designed around a flawed concept) and the Sea Gladiator (a biplane fighter expected to deal with modern all metal low wing monoplanes in combat).
