FROM THE BOX-ALMOST: Modelling The DML M3 Half-track

In the period between WWI and WWII the development of armour and the tactics for its use proceeded in a number of different directions in different countries in Europe and in the USA. The US military authorities recognised the need to increase the mobility of its forces and realised that an efficient, battlefield capable mode of transport was required. To this end a half-track vehicle based on the M3A1 scout car was constructed with the designation T7. This vehicle was underpowered, but substitution of a more powerful engine resulted in an acceptable vehicle that received the designation 'Half-Track Car M2'. This was envisaged as an artillery tractor, but a version with a longer body was designed in order to carry troops, receiving the designation 'Half-Track Personnel Carrier M3'.
