When he started ALTA Metallurgical Services back in 1985, Victorian-based consultant Alan Taylor had no idea the company would eventually spawn two of Australia's most technically exhilarating metallurgical forums. Taylor was working as a senior metallurgist with Fluor Daniel in Melbourne when he decided to go it alone, partly because of his desire to stay in the technical side of the business, but mostly due to his church commitments. He had been active with the Christian church since the second half of the 1960s, but had taken a break from his responsibilities after moving to Australia with his wife Joan and their five daughters in 1980. In 1984, however, Taylor decided to start another church - his decision helped by a sympathetic Fluor, which promised him six months of consulting work to help him get up on his feet.
