Image analysis of polished particle sections iscommon technique for measuring the liberation spectrum ofmineral particle populations .The liberation distributionsmeasured from particle sections differ from the actualdistribution by what is known as the stereological error .Thiserror always overestimates the degree of liberation by amountsdependent on factors such as the type of measurement (eg, linearor areal) ,particle composition and texture .For example ,aparticle may be composite ,but the section may reveal only onephase making it apparently liberated .Numerous methods havebeen proposed for correcting this error .Some of them are notappropriate for real mineralogical textures and are thereforepractically useless .This paper focuses on two existingstereological correction methods for binary mineralogicalsystems: the Gay allocation method and the transformation kernelmethod .The transformation kernel correction procedure wasfound to provide somewhat more accurate and detailed resultsfor the iron oxide ore investigated.
