A pleasant encounter recently confirmed my belief that history often sits at our feet, unrecognized and often under-appreciated, simply waiting to be stumbled upon and savored during the joys of unexpected discovery. During a reconnaissance trip to Virginia last year, I had the pleasure of meeting Steve Watson, a former school administrator turned real estate agent par excellence in Charlottesville, Virginia, who casually mentioned that his grandfather, one Thomas L. Watson, had been a geologist with interests apparently similar to my own. One discussion led to another, and I decided to learn more about this '"Dr. Watson", as his grandson called him.
