This is a colorful and sturdy soft cover book of more than 200 pages, exceptionally well illustrated throughout with numerous color photographs of superb specimens and localities, supplemented with additional black and white historical images of famous localities, maps etc. It sports a large format (essentially 8.5" X 11", perfect bound) with heavy, glossy stock, with a sturdy and eye-catching full color cover. While the last thirty-plus pages are devoted to remarkable bibliography and index, the minerals and their localities are the attraction here. The authors are no strangers to mineralogy, and both are mineral namees (symesite and brianyoungite) as well. Their long association with the Natural History Museum (London) and the British Geological Survey provided full access to the extraordinary collections and historical records of this prolific area, running south from the Scottish border, including Cumbria (formerly Cumberland, Westmoreland and parts of Lancashire), Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham and parts of Cleveland and North Yorkshire counties.
