The Flint Creek Range of Montana is located near towns with well-known mining histories: the mountains lie northwest of Anaconda, east of Philipsburg, west of Deer Lodge and south of Drummond. The range has several mining districts that are well known to mineral collectors, with the Philipsburg area with its districts, including Granite and Tower on the west side of the range being the best known for the mineral specimens that area produced in the past, and on occasion still provides. There are no major mining operations in the mountains now, but there are many old mines and mine dumps to attract the mineral collector. The range is rugged with deeply incised canyons and high rugged peaks, reaching elevations over 9,500 feet. The valley floors around the range are 4,500-5,500 feet. The higher peaks are bare rock, and the lower ridges and valleys are forested. The mining districts are typically accessible after May, but become covered with snow again in November or earlier.
