July 2009: Bundeswehr formally issued $4,655 billion order for 405 Igel/Puma vehicles. December 2010: Bundeswehr accepted first two production-standard vehicles for verification testing. Production forecast reflects the initial Bundeswehr Igel/Puma procurement, as well as potential export sales. The data in this report refer to the new Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) program, which began in September 2002. After the German government canceled the original Schutzenpanzer Marder 2 program in 1992, the Schutzenpanzer Marder replacement program experienced a series of reinstatements, cancellations, and new reinstatements - one as part of the Neue Gepanzerte Plattformen program. The most recent incarnation of the program originally proceeded under the designation Igel (Hedgehog); since June 2003, the program has carried the designation Puma. To account for these frequent name changes, we will refer to the vehicle as the Igel/Puma to avoid confusing it with any other Puma vehicles already in service.
