It may not have been seen as a sports car in the mould of the E-Type Jaguar or Austin-Healey 3000 but the Mercedes-Benz 230SL, model designation W113, launched at the Geneva Show in 1963, led where many grand tourers followed in the 1970s and beyond. Even today the design looks thoroughly modern - the grille dominated by the large central three-pointed star is still alive and well on Mercedes models 50 years later.
