What's in a licence? Looking at the legalities behind the forms of driver licensing

It's not that difficult to work out the legalities of driver licensing for anyone intending to drive a truck for a living - or hire or reward to use the official term. If you drive a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight (GWV), sometimes known as maximum authorised mass (MAM) or gross vehicle mass (GVM) that exceeds 3,500kg, you will need an LGV licence. GVW does not refer to the weight of the vehicle alone, but the combined weight of the load plus the driver, passengers, any equipment and the vehicle.
