New South Wales Celebrates Gold Discovery of 1851

Celebrations on April 14th, 2001, at the Ophir Reserve near Orange in the Central West of New South Wales marked the 150~(th) anniversary of the discovery of the first payable goldfield in Australia. That famous first find was made at Ophir, about 25 km north of Orange, between April 7~(th) and 15~(th), 1851.Several hundred people attended the event. Organized by the Cabonne Shire Council, the day included a formal presentation, historical reenactments by the Lachlan Valley Living History Group and a gold panning competition for children.
