WHEN LESS IS MORE: The drive to reduce exhaust emissions

Improving fuel efficiency and tougher emissions regulations being introduced throughout the world are driving manufacturers to introduce new technologies at an increasing rate, keeping up with them is becoming difficult but perhaps some of the following information will help. There is an increasing move away from four cylinder engines to three cylinder units in small and light cars. Ford has recently introduced the three cylinder 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine for its Focus range (see main image, left) and Volkswagen is using a three cylinder unit powering cars like the Polo and the new Up! This trend is not only being seen in Europe, the Indian market version of the BMW 3-Series (F30) is also to be available with a three cylinder Diesel engine.
