Petrol and diesel engines have always been very different animals - diesel renowned for good, low end torque and petrol for high revving, long legged acceleration - but over the years these differences have become less obvious. The window rattling of diesel has been all but eradicated by high pressure common-rail injection and the refinement of the petrol engine's valve timing mechanism has improved power output and flexibility.
