Attracting good quality apprentices requires more than glossy careers posters. It means methodical spadework, getting out to the schools 'to tell it as it really is', says Nick Jaye. I view the value of apprenticeships in terms of gardening. You start with seeds (apprentices), feed them (time at college, gaining knowledge), and nurture them (coaching in the workplace) until finally they flower (pass their exams and become qualified). Then all the effort, time and money invested in them comes to fruition, i.e. they start earning you money to repay the faith you showed in them.
