There are few thornier subjects for legislators than that of truck weights and dimensions. From a politician's perspective, advocating longer and heavier trucks is seen as a certain vote loser. Few people want larger trucks, some may think the ones we have are big enough already and nobody wants heavier trucks, often because they think that they will be bigger too, even though legally permitted truck dimensions have not changed in over 20 years, while the maximum permitted weight limit rose from 40-tonnes gross combination weight (GCW) to 44-tonnes GCW in 2001.
