Years ago in the motoring news business I'd often say to industry PRs groping for publicity ideas - organise a survey (and let me have the results before anyone else, naturally). The message still holds good. Just count the number of news-page items in today's paper containing those magic words "a survey suggests". Many are clearly contrived and of dubious value. A few are worth the effort. A survey of some 17,000 motorists by the AA into the progress of satnav is one of them.
