It is so easy to start using social media because everyone says you 'should' be doing it, but unless you are clear about what you want to get out of social media, you could be wasting your time and money. There are far too many businesses which have social media accounts set up by an intern or teenager because they said it was easy to set one up. In other companies I have seen very junior people given the responsibility for 'doing' the business social media because they were the only person in the company who had Facebook or Twitter for personal use. Too many business owners seem to think that because their web designer set up a Twitter account that they are on Twitter, not realising that their account is gathering cobwebs. I have also seen many businesses being taken for a ride by social media experts just because they didn't have a basic understanding of social media.
