MIM regular Richard Yarrow looks at the concept of dynamic charging and predicts its impact on demand for EVs. British automotive research organisation TRL has revealed it's playing a key role in a new pan-European project on 'dynamic charging' of EVs, with a view to boosting future demand. The study will consider two types of charging for battery-powered vehicles as they move around - wireless and conductive. Wireless uses two magnetic coils, one built into the vehicle, the other on the road. An oscillating magnetic field generated by the lower one transfers energy to the higher one. It works over a distance of around 20cm and is up to 95 per cent efficient. Static wireless charging is already a viable solution, and many EV manufacturers have committed to installing the hardware for it in future models.
