摘要

Mississippi has large natural-occurring carbon dioxide production from formations in an area near its capital of Jackson resulting from an ancient underground volcano that, when it erupted, sent carbon dioxide gases into the subsurface formations. In the 1970s, Shell Oil began producing the gas and piping it to its oil fields in southwest Mississippi for an enhanced recovery program. Denbury Resources acquired and developed substantial carbon dioxide reserves in the Jackson area which it uses for enhanced oil recovery in its fields in Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas. Mississippi Power Company is planning to build an integrated gasification combine cycle electric power plant in Kemper County that will use open-pit-mined, on-site lignite.
