California Legislature Promulgates New Suction Dredge Mining Requirements In 2009 the State of California enacted a statutory moratorium on suction dredge mining, a form of small-scale or recreational mining in which a motorized vacuum pulls material from the bed of a river or stream to be sifted for gold deposits. See Cal. Fish & Game Code § 5653.1; see also Vol. XXX, No. 3 (2013) of this Newsletter. The practice has recently come under fire from environmental organizations for the damage it can cause to water quality and streambed habitat.
