摘要

Colorado School of Mines has opened a permanent space exhibit in the main floor of Arthur Lakes Library. The exhibit, which was dedicated in ceremonies on April 12, will feature a variety of space-related memorabilia ranging from rocks to meteorites to maps. The first exhibit has an assortment of items from Apollo 17, the last manned moon mission. Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison "Jack" Schmitt, the last of 12 Americans to walk on the moon, was guest speaker at the dedication ceremony. Schmitt, a former U.S. Senator from New Mexico, received an honorary doctor of engineering degree from CSM in 1973 and was awarded an honorary membership in CSMAA in 1974. Schmitt said that the moon has great Potential for mining and energy development. He praised the motion picture "Apollo 13" for its technical accuracy, but said that the mission control team members were 10 to 15 years younger than they were portrayed in the film.
