Most quarry operators are worried that the landfill tax which took effect in October could encourage more recycling of building materials and so reduce the already depressed demand for aggregates. That, indeed, is what die Government intends it to do. Mike Walton at BFI, on the other hand, is more concerned about the direct effect of the tax on tipping. The reason for his concern is that his directorship of BH gives him responsibility not only for the UK operation's 13 quarries but also for its 18 landfill sites. BFI are not the only quarry operators who also run landfill sites, of course. And whether they are run by the extraction company or sold on, a fair number of mineral extraction sites go on to become landfill sites.
